Overview

The country house near Spa of the art dealer Ernest Gambart (Wikipedia, «Ernest Gambart», per the RSR note at 023.0224; cf. 021.0391): gardens «très bien arrangées et beaux» with ornamental ponds, where Gambart receives the Spa summer colony.

In Marie's diary

• 1874-06-28 (020.0419): they are driven to «le château d'Alsa, chez M. Gambart». The gardens are well arranged and, in that climate, green; she rows on the lake, and Gambart's thin portions at dinner annoy her (020.0420-0421). The English guest Wheelwright is there.
• 1874-07-01 (020.0483): «Nous prenons Basilévitch et faisons route vers Alsa. Je conduis le cheval. Nous étions quatre, toutes très élégantes»; the chansonnier Nadaud performs (020.0487).
• 1874-08-19 (023.0224, from Ostend): news from Spa: Gambart is decorated, and during his absence Marguerite with her suite and the Princess of Prussia spent hours at Alsa fishing crayfish and trout stocked in the ponds for the occasion.
