Zuccarini

Overview

A dinner guest in Paris on 10 July 1884, described by Marie in some detail — the diary's own words are essentially all we have on him: "Ce Zuccarini a été aide de camp de feu duc de Parme, une épave de la Nice impériale. Il a bien cinquante [ans] passés mais à trente pas, c'est un tout jeune homme, assez petit, mince, petite moustache noire. Il tourne déjà au petit vieux-jeune et mourra sous cette enveloppe de petit jeune homme." (105.0113) — "This Zuccarini was aide-de-camp to the late Duke of Parma, a wreck of imperial Nice. He's well past fifty but from thirty paces looks quite a young man — rather short, thin, small black mustache. He's already turning into a little old-young man and will die inside that envelope of a young man."

Historical Context

The "late Duke of Parma" is almost certainly Charles III, Duke of Parma (1823-1854, assassinated) or, more likely given the phrase "Nice impériale" (imperial Nice — evoking the pre-1860 era when Nice belonged to the Kingdom of Sardinia and hosted an international aristocratic winter colony), a reference to the exiled Bourbon-Parma court that settled in and around Nice after losing the Duchy of Parma to Italian unification in 1859-1860. "Une épave de la Nice impériale" (a wreck/relic of imperial Nice) situates Zuccarini as a leftover figure of that vanished aristocratic world, decades later reduced to a curiosity at a Paris dinner party — no independent biographical identification beyond the diary's own description has been found.
