Une larme
Également connu sous : Une larme, A Tear
Overview
Une larme ("A Tear") is a small oil on canvas, 40 × 32 cm, monogrammed M.B. at upper left, in the Musée des Beaux-Arts Jules Chéret in Nice under inventory N.Mba 1801. The museum's Joconde notice indexes its subject as a self-portrait: Marie in profile, in sorrow. The notice gives no date beyond the last quarter of the nineteenth century.
History
The notice records it as entering the museum in 1909, a gift by hand (don manuel), with "Collection privée, Bashkirtseff Marie" as its previous owner. The family's gifts to Nice ran from 1909 to 1920; the Autoportrait à la palette came in 1920.
A possible catalogue match. The 1885 memorial catalogue lists a Profil (no. 10) measuring 0,40 × 0,32 m, exactly the size of this canvas. A head in profile of the right size is suggestive, but a title like that could fit several studies, so the identification is not established.
