Stoltz

Overview

Two singers by this name are possible, and the diary does not tell them apart in its second mention. 1. Teresa Stolz (spelled Stoltz by Marie), the Czech-born soprano who sang the soprano part in the first performance of Verdi's Requiem (Milan, 22 May 1874) with the mezzo Maria Waldmann (en.wikipedia «Teresa Stolz», «Requiem (Verdi)»). 2. Rosine Stoltz (1815–1903), the French mezzo-soprano of the Paris Opéra (as in the footnote of the 1875 paragraph; we have not verified the dates here). The Mon Journal indexes have «Stoltz (Mme), cantatrice, 225» (t.3) and «Stoltz (cantatrice), 147» (t.5) without distinguishing.

Relevance to Marie

• 9 June 1874 (Paris): Verdi, who conducted the Requiem, is greeted with frenzied applause. «J'écoutais attentivement la Woldmann et la Stoltz car on sait que jadis j'eus quelques prétentions» (020.0183). The pair «Woldmann» and «Stoltz» matches the Milan soloists Waldmann and Stolz, so this is Teresa Stolz (our reading; the sources we found do not give the Paris cast).
• 25 June 1875 (Nice): the connoisseur Barnola says she can have a voice «comme la Vigier, comme la Stoltz» (034.0594). The reader footnote there says Rosine Stoltz; since Marie names the soprano Vigier (VICOMTESSE_VIGIER) beside her, and she had heard Teresa Stolz a year earlier, Teresa Stolz is at least as likely (not settled). Identity uncertain

For 034.0594 we cannot choose between Teresa and Rosine. If you can tell from the repertoire which Stoltz a Nice amateur would cite in 1875, we would be glad to hear from you.
