Marie meets M. Soldatenkoff in Madrid on 10 October 1881; she calls him «un marchand millionnaire qui voyage beaucoup et adore les arts et les artistes» (093.0201). The Mon Journal t.14 index reads «Soldatenkoff (M.), marchand : 223». This is very probably Kozma Terentyevich Soldatenkov (1818–1901), the Moscow textile industrialist, publisher and collector of Russian art (his gallery on Myasnitskaya held over two hundred Russian paintings), a major patron of the arts (en.wikipedia «Kozma Soldatyonkov»; Russian State Library page) (confidence 0.8; the diary gives no first name).Relevance to Marie
He and «son docteur» present themselves at the Prado «de la part des Karaouleff» (see KARAOULEFF), two old and ugly men in her words. The next day he asks her whether she sells her work: «J'ai eu la bêtise de dire que non, mais j'espère le revoir et il m'achètera peut-être quelque chose à Paris. En Russie on n'est pas blagueur du tout et puis les femmes artistes sont plus que rares» (093.0202). No sale is recorded in the diary.References in Diary
