Récamier

Overview

Juliette Récamier (1777–1849), Paris society beauty and salon hostess, painted by Jacques-Louis David (1800, unfinished) and by Gérard, friend of Chateaubriand (en.wikipedia «Juliette Récamier»; Britannica). Marie thinks of her as the type of the celebrated beauty. Her husband was the banker Jacques-Rose Récamier; two of Marie's tags (101.0195, 101.0212) concern «M. Récamier» as husband.

Relevance to Marie

• November 1873. She reads Sainte-Beuve's Les femmes célèbres and remembers the woman whose name she has forgotten: «Récamier ? Je veux un jour me coiffer comme elle, et... m'habiller, c'est-à-dire me déshabiller comme elle. Qu'elle est belle» (012.0141).
• April 1880. At her first sitting with the American model Alice Brisbane she dresses her in the style of David's portrait: «Elle ressemble à Mme Récamier, je lui retrousse les cheveux à la Psyché, et lui mets une chemise de batiste ... » (088.0028).
• July 1883. «Le ciel ne m'a donné qu'une beauté relative, je ne puis donc être une Récamier, mais je suis beaucoup mieux que plusieurs femmes célèbres» (100.0443).
• August 1883. Teasing herself with the idea of marrying an older famous man: «Vous... M. Récamier, M. de Girardin etc. Voilà l'avantage» (101.0195); «Si j'épousai Saint-Amand-Récamier-Girardin... Ce serait tout de même drôle» (101.0212). She jokes about marrying the older man of letters Saint-Amand, as famous salon women married a Récamier or a Girardin; the allusion to Girardin is not explained in the text (our reading).
