This thematic tag collects diary paragraphs about property and capital: the family estates in Poltava province, land sold or bought, houses and villas owned, rented or leased, inheritance and wills, dowries, shares, bonds, capital placed to yield a rente, and quarrels or lawsuits over any of these. It is about wealth that is held, as distinct from Money, which is about money that is spent, owed, lost or counted.
Tagging Criteria
- Tag estates, land and houses as property: buying, selling, renting, leasing or managing them; the income they yield.
- Tag inheritance, wills, legacies, dowries, marriage settlements, and family claims or lawsuits over property.
- Tag investments: capital, shares, bonds, a rente seen as capital producing income.
- Do not tag everyday belongings ("ma chambre", "mon piano", a new hat), a rented hotel room or villa mentioned only as an address, or wealth mentioned only as a sum (that is Money only).
- A paragraph about the price of an estate or the income from a sale takes both Property and Money.
Whose Property: the Qualifier Tags
Every paragraph tagged Property also takes one or both qualifier tags, which say whose property it is:
- Property: family (`#Property_family`) — Marie's own, or her family's: the Babanine and Bashkirtseff estates, grandfather's will, her dowry, her capital.
- Property: others (`#Property_others`) — somebody else's, or property in general: a suitor's lands, an heiress's fortune, a duke selling his stable, the law of inheritance.
In the site's filter, selecting the qualifier narrows Property to one side; selecting Property alone shows both.
Notable Patterns
- The Babanine and Bashkirtseff estates (Gavronzi, Tcherniakovka) and the family's quarrels over them surface whenever Marie is in Russia or her father is discussed.
- Grandfather Babanine's will and the uncles' claims recur in the early carnets; the sale of a Russian estate in 1881 is expected to give Marie her own capital.
- Dowry and settlements tie Property to Marriage.
