## Basic Information

Charles III (8 December 1818 -- 10 September 1889) was the ruling Prince of Monaco from 1856 to 1889. He was the prince who presided over Monaco's transformation into a gambling destination and luxury resort, granting the concession to Francois Blanc to operate the Monte Carlo Casino in 1863.

## Connection to Marie's Diary

As the sovereign of Monaco during the period Marie frequented Nice and Monte Carlo (1873-1884), Prince Charles III was the ultimate authority in the tiny principality that featured so prominently in Marie's social world. The pigeon shooting competitions, casino events, and theater performances Marie attended at Monte Carlo all took place under his reign. Monte Carlo itself was named after him ("Mount Charles").
