Overview

12 May 1878, Paris: "J'ai peint ma première nature morte. Un vase en porcelaine bleue avec un bouquet de violettes et un petit livre rouge et usé à côté, sur une toile de 3. Comme cela je ne cesserai pas de dessiner et je m'habituerai aux couleurs en y consacrant deux ou trois heures le dimanche, chaque dimanche je ferai quelque chose d'autre." (080.0121). It follows the exercise ordered by #Robert_Fleury on 23 March (#Tete_de_squelette); on 23 May at the atelier she starts another still life, "deux oranges et un couteau" (080.0257).

Marie and this work

Per the project catalogue (`docs/research/marie-bashkirtseff-works-catalogue.md`, row 13), Kernberger (2013) prints an illustration captioned "Still Life (May 1878)" and locates it at Nice, Musée Jules Chéret; no museum record has been found, and the date matches Marie's entry exactly, so the identification with this diary still life is likely but unverified (status "attributed"). The same catalogue row queries a match with "Nature morte" no. 11 of the 1885 memorial catalogue (0,65 × 0,35 m); that is unchecked and the size is not obviously that of a small canvas. No public-domain image is available.
