Ernesto Rossi

Overview

Ernesto Rossi (1827-1896), Italian tragic actor, with Tommaso Salvini the leading Italian interpreter of Shakespeare in the second half of the century; Othello was one of his great parts, and he toured widely abroad (Wikipedia, "Ernesto Rossi"). The Mon Journal tome 5 index lists him as "Rossi, comédien".

Relevance to Marie

On 19 April 1875 Marie sees him as Othello at the Théâtre-Italien of Nice with Mlle Collignon (031.0297): "ce célèbre comédien Rossi". She is pleased to understand the Italian, but finds the acting a grotesque parody, Rossi "tout le temps comme des coliques" (031.0299).
