Adolphe Crémieux
Également connu sous : Crémieux, Cremieux
Overview
Isaac Adolphe Crémieux (1796–10 February 1880) was a prominent French Jewish lawyer, statesman, and president of the Alliance Israélite Universelle (1863–1880). He served twice as Minister of Justice — under the Second Republic (1848) and the Government of National Defence (1870–1871) — and is best known for the Crémieux Decree (1870), which granted French citizenship to Algerian Jews. He died in Paris on 10 February 1880. Marie does not mention him by name in the diary; the «Crémieux (il est ton tailleur)» of 084/1879-01-15 is a tailor, not him (unproven jibe, no tag).
Mme Crémieux
The «Mme Crémieux» of Mme de Mouzay's soirées (088/1880-04-26 and 1880-05-26) is filed apart as Mme Crémieux: the diary does not say that she is Adolphe's widow (née Amélie Silny, 1810–1882 per Wikipedia-type sources), and the identification is only about 0.5. CORRECTION to the earlier text of this entry, which took the reference to his widow as certain.
