Overview

Le Vicomte de Bragelonne, ou Dix ans plus tard (serialized 1847-1850) is the third and last of Alexandre Dumas père's d'Artagnan romances, after Les Trois Mousquetaires and Vingt ans après, written with Auguste Maquet. It is a very long novel of the court of the young Louis XIV; it contains the story of the Man in the Iron Mask, the love of Raoul, vicomte de Bragelonne (Athos's son) for Louise de La Vallière, whom the king takes from him, and the deaths of Athos, Porthos and d'Artagnan. (Wikipedia, "The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later"; for the author see Alexandre Dumas.)

Marie and this work

For Marie Bragelonne is the great novel of the series, and Raoul is the standard of pure, devoted love.

  • April-May 1874 (Nice). On 25 April she reads it in the evening and it "m'amuse assez" (019.0009); on 8 May she finishes it: "La dernière partie est trop déchirante, plusieurs fois je ne pus retenir mes larmes, d'autres fois je me levais indignée, touchée, chagrinée les poings serrés. Quelle enfant !" (019.0148).
  • 28 June 1874. While the family goes to the Casino she stays home and finishes her hat and "le deuxième volume de Bragelonne", a rereading (020.0427).
  • 11 April 1876 (057.0166). The touchstone: she allows herself lying, she says, and seems a mad girl without principles or heart, "et pourtant tout ce qui n'est pas aussi pur et aussi honnête et aussi romanesque que Le vicomte de Bragelonne de Dumas, me choque."
  • 6 May 1876 (059.0812, 059.0815). She leafs through it with the other Dumas (see the Trois Mousquetaires entry) and likes the "prélats turbulents et galants".
  • 29 June 1876 (062.0802). She is "excessivement chagrinée quand je ne trouve pas cet amour pur, cet amour de Raoul de Bragelonne", the unselfish love she demands of others but, she says, does not feel herself; Bruschetti, who did not shoot himself after her refusal, is the contrary example. The note at this paragraph explains Raoul's death of grief.
  • 11 May 1878 (080.0110). Paul de Cassagnac "se prend pour d'Artagnan", with phrases copied from "Les Mousquetaires" or "Le vicomte de Bragelone".
