Overview

An Italian marquis whom Marie knew from Nice and meets again in Rome in March 1876. The printed edition reads «Borgagli» (Mon Journal t.7 pp.160-161, and index p.357 «Borgagli (marquis) : 160-161, 181», checked on the scan); our French text carries the OCR misreading «Sorgagli» (see Research notes). Not identified further.

Relevance to Marie

«Sur le Corso nous avons rencontré le marquis Borgagli une vieille connaissance de Nice dont je m'étonne de n'avoir jamais dit un mot. Il revient du Caire» (055/1876-03-21). Marie forgets his home town, but «il est presque romain et son oncle a été vingt ans ministre ici»; he is thirty-five to forty, a widower with a son. He calls that evening and «se souvient de mes robes comme Danis et qui "m'étudie depuis quatre ans"». On 27 March 1876 he is among the men who join her carriage with Torlonia and Plowden (056.0004).

Research notes

The uncle «vingt ans ministre ici» is probably Scipione Bargagli (Siena 1798 – Rome 1868), made a marquis by Pius IX in 1848, Tuscany's minister resident to the Holy See from 24 September 1846 (plenipotentiary from April 1859), who kept the legation at Palazzo Firenze until 1866 (Treccani, Dizionario Biografico, «Bargagli, Scipione»): twenty years as a minister in Rome, a Sienese family settled in Rome («il est presque romain»). The marquis would then be a Bargagli of Siena, the town Marie forgets, and «Borgagli» the edition's (or Marie's) spelling of Bargagli (0.7). Which Bargagli he is (Scipione had a son, Celso, a diplomat; his brother Luigi lived 1801–1885) is not established. The «Sorgagli» spelling in 055/1876-03-21 and 056/1876-03-27 is a B/S OCR slip in tome07.docx and its text layer; the printed page has «Borgagli».
