Baltazzi
Également connu sous : Baltazzi
Overview
A gentleman rider whose horses Marie rode in Paris in June 1874: «Je vais monter Foliero à M. Baltazzi, nous n'avons pas nos chevaux ici et je monte les chevaux de ce monsieur. Maman n'a pas peur de me laisser avec lui, il monte très bien» (020.0034, 1 June 1874). Mon Journal t.3 index: «Baltazzi (M.), 211» (a later page, not tagged).
Identity uncertain
We are not sure which Baltazzi this is. The Baltazzi brothers were a Greek banking family of Vienna and Constantinople who were prominent racehorse owners in the second half of the century (Hector, Aristide, Alexander and Henry; Aristide, 1853–1914, sat on the board of the Vienna Jockey Club), and a Baltazzi riding in Paris in the Grand Prix season would fit. But no source consulted places any of them in Paris in 1874 or mentions a horse called Foliero, and the diary gives no first name. If you can identify him, we would be glad to hear from you.
