Aquarium (Stazione Zoologica, Naples)
Également connu sous : Aquarium, l'Aquarium, Stazione Zoologica
Overview
The Aquarium is the public aquarium of the Stazione Zoologica in Naples, founded by Anton Dohrn and built 1872-74 in the Villa Reale (now Villa Comunale) gardens on the Chiaia seafront, one of the first public aquariums in Europe. It is a place, not a person (the entry was originally misfiled under people/mentioned). In Marie's 1877 Naples diary it is the setting of her "rendez-vous" with Larderel.
In Marie's diary
- 069.0669 (1877-04-01): April Fool prank: Marie and Doenhoff write some twenty letters, "Ce soir à six heures près de l'Aquarium absolument"; many dupes turn up, among them the Prussians of the prince's suite.
- 070.0195 and 070.0201 (1877-04-07): Marie walks in the Villa Reale; Larderel appears at the west side of the Aquarium; "allons derrière l'Aquarium et puis nous y entrerons". The Marquise de Piccolelis is brought into the quarrel.
- 070.0886 and 070.0893 (1877-04-23): after Larderel's wounding note, Marie writes "Cet Aquarium ! Mais j'étais folle de jalousie" and, in her second letter to him, that had she understood what she was doing in going to the Aquarium she would not have troubled him.
- 072.0457 (1877-07-09): in the fortune-teller's list of her escapades: "2. Aquarium, Monaco", the Aquarium rendez-vous followed by the Monaco disguise plan (072.0476, 1877-07-11).
The "fameux rendez-vous de l'Aquarium" (072.0476) became, in Marie's memory, the emblem of the humiliation she suffered with Larderel in April 1877.
