André Theuriet

Basic Information

André Theuriet (1833–1907) was a French poet and novelist, later a member of the Académie française. For this project he matters twice over: as a writer Marie read and quoted, and as the man her mother enlisted after Marie's death to edit the diary for publication. The two-volume 1887 Charpentier edition that made Marie famous, and that cut roughly three quarters of what she wrote, appeared under his editorship, with a preface by François Coppée.

In Marie's Diary

- June 1883 (100.0010): listing the portraits she admires, Marie names, among two or three by Bastien-Lepage shown at the "Exposition des portraits du siècle", those of his brother, of Theuriet and of Sarah Bernhardt.

- April 1884 (104.0002): planning Le Printemps, she describes the dreaming girl at the foot of the apple tree as "alanguie et grisée", adding "comme dit A. Theuriet". The borrowed phrase is discussed in the Le Printemps entry.
