Overview

Pyotr Pavlovich Albedinsky (Moscow 1826 – Warsaw 19 May 1883), Russian cavalry officer and adjutant-general, wounded at Inkerman in the Crimean War. Governor-General of Livonia, Courland and Estland 1866–1870, Governor-General of Vilna, Kovno and Grodno from 22 July 1874 to 1880 (promoted general of cavalry in 1878), then, from 18 May 1880 until his death, Governor-General of Warsaw (viceroy of Russian Poland). He married Alexandra Sergeyevna, née Princess Dolgorukova; Maurice Paléologue thought Alexander II arranged the match. Relevance to Marie

  • 4 August 1876. On her way to Russia Marie learns that Paul is in St Petersburg «avec le général-gouverneur de Wilna, M. Albedinsky, celui qui a épousé la favorite (une ancienne) de l'Empereur» (064.0413); Paul's friend Count Mouravieff was to meet her at Vilna, but the train passed there at three in the morning.
  • 23 July 1881. At Paris (Pré Catelan) the elderly Count Paskevitch d'Erivan, whom Albedinsky keeps at his château, is the subject of her jibe: «ce débris est attaché au Général Gouverneur Albedinsky qui a droit de vie et de mort dans le royaume de Pologne» (092.0324). By then Albedinsky governed Warsaw, as Marie's «royaume de Pologne» implies; she adds: «Albedinsky doit sa fortune à son mariage avec une princesse Dolgorouky dont l'Empereur a été longtemps le protecteur», which agrees with 064.0413 and with Wikipedia (footnote 092.0324.5 speaks of a different Dolgorukova, the Emperor's later wife).
