Basic Information
Mathilde Blind (1841–1896), German-born English poet and woman of letters, produced the first English translation of Marie's diary: The Journal of Marie Bashkirtseff (London: Cassell, 1890), made from the censored 1887 Charpentier edition and abridged further still. It remained the only English version until Katherine Kernberger's unabridged translation of 2013.
Significance for This Project
Her Introduction to the 1890 volume is quoted in several glossary entries as an early English witness to Marie's reception: it calls the diary "a book in the nude, breathing and palpitating with life" and remarks on Marie's facility for languages and the range of her personal library (see the French and English language entries). Because Blind worked from the 1887 text, her version inherits all of its cuts; passages absent there, such as the Georges material, are absent in Blind too.
