I went to the doctor this morning — that is the third time in a fortnight. He has me come back in order to have a louis each time, for the course of treatment is always the same to follow... It is truly enough to drive one mad. Out of a thousand cases, I am told, deafness comes about once... And it is precisely my case! But one sees every day throat sufferers, consumptives who suffer, who die — but do not go deaf! Ah — it is a misfortune so unexpected, so horrible! Was it not enough — everything! That I lose my voice, that I am ill — must there also be this nameless torment? It must be to punish me for having cried out over trifles. It is God who punishes me! The God of forgiveness, of goodness, of mercy.
But the wickedest of men would not be more relentless! And I am tortured at every instant — blushing before my own family, feeling their accommodation in speaking more loudly! In shops, trembling every minute — but there it still passes; the noise of the street... one speaks more loudly.
But with friends — all the stratagems I employ to conceal it. No, no, no — it is too cruel, it is too dreadful, it is too appalling! The painting and the models...! I cannot hear what they say and I tremble lest they speak. Do you suppose the work does not suffer? When Rosalie is there she helps me; alone, I am seized by vertigo and my tongue refuses to say: speak more loudly, I cannot hear well!
My God, have pity on me. And if I do not believe in God it is to die instantly of despair.
The lung followed from the throat, and the throat caused what is happening to the ears! And now to treat that! But I have always taken care of myself — it is Krishaber who did the damage; it is following his treatment that I... My God, must one then be so atrociously cut off from the rest of the world!
And it is I — I — I!
Ah — there are those for whom it would not be so painful! But...
Oh — what a horrible thing! Oh — what dreadful punishment for having done what? No more than anyone else! And certainly nothing infamous, nothing criminal.

Notes

A louis — a gold coin worth 20 francs — was a substantial doctor's fee. Marie returns repeatedly (three times in a fortnight) for ear treatments with no apparent improvement.
Dr. Maurice Krishaber (1836–1883): a prominent Viennese-born Parisian specialist in ear, nose, and throat diseases, whom Marie blames for her worsening deafness. His treatment regime apparently aggravated her condition rather than helping it.
