Uncle Etienne finds Mme Tarnowsky at church — an aristocrat from Konotop — and we bring her home to lunch. While she is still with us, the Princess Karageorgevitch arrives with her son, a green boy of eighteen playing the young man of the world.
I believe I have already told you that the prince's father abdicated for himself and his descendants, and that it is Prince Pierre who is the Don Carlos of Serbia. I believe Maman knew them at Nice or at Ostende; in any case, it is very gracious of the princess to call first.
I am afraid people from Nice may spoil the Gavinis for me.
And at four o'clock Mme Tarnowsky, Etienne, Dina, and I make an ascent in the captive balloon.
It would be an immense pleasure if there were no strangers, and if not for the ground crew with all their vulgar preparations — and then this cable gives one a humiliating sensation. I should like a free balloon, going up only with someone agreeable, with the aeronaut turned the other way — or quite alone. Then it would be perfect delight.
The Baron d'Alt called, and we went to the Coubés'.
I shall always have painting, and if I have nothing else, I shall make something great of it and try to persuade myself that it is great enough... I shall never manage it! If I succeed — well. But if I do not succeed, I shall have squandered my youth for nothing.
Upon my word of honor — I reason as if I had a choice!
