Sunday, 1 November 1874

I am not going to church — but Dina, that pious creature, certainly will, her hair curled at the front, taking care to display her most golden locks at the back. There is a woman who will spend her life in church and in bed.
There was no music, but the weather was fine and the handsome Sunday promenaders [sic] did not fail to display their splendours.
"Let us cite in first place, and with just cause, M. Émile d'Audiffret" — in black, in a top hat. He is plain without a hat, but in a top hat he is worse. The only outfit that suits him is his gray suit with a simple hat — when he wears those he is quite nice-looking, but otherwise he is common and ugly.
Maman is vexed to have seen me blush on account of this person, and she stares at me when he passes, which makes me blush all the more. And how stupid and tiresome this is for me!
I have the good sense not to deny it — I merely complain about it — but my complaints do not reassure anyone. They ought to, though — they are true.
