A Paris sporting and society paper, subtitled «journal des gens du monde», founded in September 1854 by Eugène Chapus (1800–1877), often called France's first sports journalist; it ran until about 1900. It covered horse racing above all, together with society news, the theatre and the fashionable seasons at Nice and elsewhere.

Marie pasted two of its reports into carnet 068: Robert Milton's accounts of the Nice races in January 1877 (068, 27 and 30 January 1877). "Robert Milton" was the pen name of the racing writer Albert de Saint-Albin (1843–1901).

Diary References

  • January 27 and 30, 1877: two clippings from Robert Milton's race reports in Le Sport, pasted into the diary (carnet 068).
  • March 12, 1881: Saint-Amand writes an article in "Le Sport" about the opening night of Patti's opera season, mentioning Marie: "très belle, type slave, très blonde, très suave, robe blanche avec guirlande de roses en sautoir" (very beautiful, Slavic type, very blonde, very graceful, white dress with garland of roses worn crosswise), noting she exhibited a much-remarked painting. Marie notes "Le Sport est très lu, c'est gentil" (Le Sport is widely read, that's nice).

Significance

Getting mentioned in a widely-read publication like Le Sport would enhance Marie's social visibility and artistic reputation. Saint-Amand's flattering description emphasizes both her beauty and her artistic credentials.
